A League of Their Own is a movie about a professional all-female baseball league formed in the Midwest during World War II when the men were at war. This movie addresses sexism through the skirts the women had to wear, while also addressing feminism through various other ways. A League of Their Own continues to honor women in baseball but also is an inspiration to women today.
A League of Their Own address’s sexism through the short skirts the players had to wear to the men who managed the teams and only wanting women who they found attractive to be on the team. In the movie, once they had selected the teams, the men had introduced the uniforms the players were required to wear. These uniforms were composed of a short and revealing skirt, and not the regular baseball pants. The men in the movie only wanted them to be in these revealing skirts just for the looks and entertainment. From seeing these uniforms, you could tell they only did it for the entertainment of the men to gain an audience at the games. Most women in society, especially back then, have been told to dress certain ways for men, like in this movie with the skirts. More recently we can see that’s not really the case anymore as women are able to dress however, they want. The women in the movie wanted to be seen for more than a “sexy” body in a skirt, but rather a woman who can play ball and play it well. These women continuously proved everyone wrong showing them that they are strong women who aren’t just housewives.
Another big move for women and the feminist movement in this movie was when Doris realizes that she is more than what other men and people thought of her. Before she believed that no “hotter” guy wanted her because she played ball, but then she realized that she’s so much more than that. Doris knew she deserved better than her boyfriend who treated her poorly. Many women these days get stuck in toxic relationships like Doris, but one thing today is we have preached to know your worth. Want women mean by this today is know who you are and what you deserve, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Many women today like feminists have the idea that they are strong and independent women who don’t need to rely on a man, just like Doris.
A League of Their Own is such a powerful movie for women that shows what women then had to go through. This movie has empowered so many women by showing what the women went through and how they overcame it. It was a small step in the direction of where women are today and feminist movements.
