Why We Need Women's Centers

The article "The Continues Importance of Women's Resource Centers" by Saucier explains women's centers' importance and why we should have them. Women's centers across the US are a home where women and other gender minorities can come and never be judged. Every college should consider having a women's center because it's a safe space, provide resources for women, and they are there to educate the community on feminism and the importance of women's centers. Women's centers are so important to have, but at the same time, they are some of the first to go when there is a budget cut.

Nowadays, women and other gender minorities want a safe space where they can go to express their issues, a place where they can advocate, and a place that supplies resources to physical and emotional needs. Women's centers across the United States "provide gender‐conscious support to women and other gender minorities," and "they also serve as hubs of feminist activism, particularly in the fight against sexual violence" (Saucier). Many colleges have clubs and other organizations that may support some of these groups, but why not have one center that aids all groups. Every women and gender minority group must be heard on campus and get the resources they need. Many women want easy access to these resources because some may not be comfortable going to the police or other resources first. Women's centers can be the help they need to make that first step comfortably. These days, women's centers can provide emotional support through various groups or counselors; they also can provide physical needs like a pregnancy test. Not all Women's centers offer the same services, but they are there to lead you in the right direction if it's not offered there. This is why women's centers are essential on campus because they provide so many resources to women and gender minorities while also educating others on advocate issues.

These days, women's centers have been seen less and less on college campuses due to "budget cuts" (Saucier). They are some of the first organizations to go when colleges make cuts to keep athletics or other programs running. Women's centers should not be one of the first to be cut because they provide all of these essential resources to women and gender minority groups. They offer sources that many may not be able to access on their own. Not only do they provide many resources, but they help women and others succeed in collegiate careers and flourish in their careers and lives after college.

Women's centers need to be recognized more for their work because they have made a difference in many women's lives. Women's centers must stay on college campuses to continue to provide resources to women and gender minority groups and educate the community about these groups. If the community realizes how important they are, maybe they won't be the first to go, but only time will tell.
