COVID-19 worsening gender-based violence, trafficking risk, for women and girls Resource Response

Women today face many problems. One major issue that women today face is sex trafficking. Another issue is gender based violence. One thing that I have learned from UN News’ article, COVID-19 worsening gender-based violence, trafficking risk, for women and girls, is that these issues are getting worse due to the current pandemic. A major reason for this is the stay at home orders. Many womens’ abusers are their intimate partners and therefore spending more time at home can lead to more violence. This is being referred to as a “shadow pandemic.” In this essay, I will argue that women today struggle with violence in today’s society especially during the current pandemic.

Domestic violence and murder have been proven to be mainly committed by family members or partners. Due to the current pandemic, people are having to spend more time at home. It is inevitable to avoid conflict when trapped inside with the same people for long periods of time. Many people are spending this time with their significant others and family. This conflict can turn physical and lead to domestic violence.

This matters because women deserve to be safe. So many people are being affected and hurt by domestic violence and human trafficking every single day. This relates to this course because it affects women today. A major topic in this course was Women’s Centers and women today. This is a very real struggle for women today. So many women worry about their safety and well being when they should not have to. The Coronavirus has caused the world today a lot of stress and this is something that might go unnoticed so it is important to educate people on what is happening. Covid-19 has impacted people’s personal lives in many ways and things like this are overlooked. It is time to raise awareness and create more resources for women so this does not continue to happen.
