Grey's Anatomy, "I Choose You" Review
Grey's Anatomy, written by Shonda Rhimes, follows the life of Meredith Grey. She begins the show as an intern at the hospital and works her way up to become the head of general surgery. We get to watch her develop and grow throughout the show. She faces many traumatic things but continues to work for her dream of becoming a surgeon. The episode, “I choose you” has really important messages for women, because it shows women in high positions and discusses equal pay.
In the beginning of the episode Meredith receives her new head of general surgery contract. Maggie and Amelia are thrilled because all three of them are now the chiefs of their speciality. Amelia called them, “Lady chief trifecta” If you go back to the earlier season most if not all of the heads of each speciality were men. It is so great to see the show evolve and give women more important roles and story lines. It’s so important for girls to be able to see women taking on important positions of power, because it makes their dreams seem possible.
Everything seems good at first but then Meredith quickly realizes she is making much less than other people in the same position. This is such a real issue that many women face, women make 81 cents for every dollar a man makes. When discussing this issue with her friends they tell her, “Walk in there and demand what you deserve. Men do it all the time.” This is such a good reminder to fight for what you deserve. When Bailey, the chief of surgery, was confronted about Meredith's pay she said, “She needs to rise, and she needs to rise on her own. So she knows that she can rise on her own.” At the end of the episode Meredith finally goes and advocates for herself and demands more pay because she deserves it. This is another really important message for women, because we are not always going to have someone that advocates for us, therefore we need to be our biggest advocate and fight for what is fair.
Overall Grey's Anatomy discusses many important topics throughout the show, which is what makes it so great. “I choose you” is one of the important episodes because it discusses equal pay and how to stand up for yourself if you are not getting it, and also shows many women that are in leadership positions.
